Why DNA Testing For Horses Is Done

By Stella Gay

Horses are amazing creatures. They are good human companions and they can become really loyal when tames and trained. They can help in the farm, they are extremely athletic and can be trained for racing or equestrian sports. Moreover, they are beautiful and relaxing to look at in the farm just roaming around with their foals.

DNA technology has been used widely especially in human forensics. But they are even more popular in the identification of parentage among horse breeds. DNA testing for horses is done by scientific experts and they can identify with much confidence and accuracy the origin of the foals. Without executing such methods, the foals cannot be registered.

The verification of the genotype of foals or baby horses is needed so that their parentage can be traced accurately. The methods are very scientific and only the scientists can demonstrate the techniques used here to ensure accuracy and reliability of the tests. An important note in this method is the identification of color patterns and coatings of the equines as well as the possibilities of diseases or genetic disorders.

As an overview of the methods, there are several steps that the experts go through. The equine hair samples are taken where they take or isolate the genes from the cells of the hair follicle. The test is proven to be ninety nine point ninety nine percent accurate.

As mandated by the International Society of Animal Genetics, it is important to test the equines so that when they are transported internationally, they will not have to go through the same process again. As long as they are already tested and registered, business can go on. There are relevant documents that need to be brought along whenever these equines are taken. Otherwise, the operation will be deemed illegal.

The results of the test can be unpredictable at times. The DNA information of the parents and the offspring sometimes does not match at all. This happens when the one dam mates with another sire when they are not supposed to be matched. Or a stallion to a mare that is not supposed to be its mate. In addition, there are also some confusion when the population of the horses is large. There is a tendency that the offsprings get interchanged.

But thanks to genetic engineering, the errors can now be corrected with ease. Scientific intervention makes business even more booming for animal farms that deal with horses. It is not so easy to verify the parentage of each of the breeds. But if in case the parents have died and there was no chance of getting their DNA samples, the foal may not be registered because of lack of gene samples from each of the parent.

All breeds need to be taken with DNA sample. This is crucial so that even if the dam or sire had died, the foal can still be registered and identified. There are many cases in which the foals are not registered because the parents have died even before the testing was undertaken.

In the future, this scientific advantage can be even more accurate that it actually already is. The professionals are already finding new ways to conduct the testing. Hence, the future of these methods is very bright and promising.
