The Usages Of Iodine Derivatives

By Donna Reed

Iodate compounds are widely used in manufacturing, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. For each of these fields, they play different roles. In agriculture, the iodine derivatives can be used to boost soil nutrient content. Similarly, manufacturers use these elements in manufacturing car tires. If there is insufficient iodide in human bodies, individuals will suffer from swollen thyroid glands. To understand how this mineral is applied, below is a detailed description.

Iodide components are known for their use in the manufacture of Liquid Crystal Display or LED screens. There are numerous such devices such as computer, television, modern watches and calculators just to mention a few. To operate, LED equipment contain fluid crystals which are activated by power. On activation, they are able to show digits such as in watches or images and videos as seen in televisions. The main use of iodide in LED components is to dope polymer polarizing screens in one direction thus allowing content display.

Human beings need iodate for proper brain functioning. Normally, it is stored in the thyroid gland to be used in small portions. Nervous and brain systems cannot develop properly in the absence of this mineral. Recognizing the importance, researchers introduced some content in animal feeds. Thus, whenever animal meat is consumed, it contains some portions of minerals. Apart from this, sodium chloride or salt is rich in this component. When individuals lack sufficient iodized compounds, they suffer from numerous disorders such as swelling of thyroid glands.

As mentioned earlier, salt does not provide adequate iodide for the proper functioning of human bodies. It is possible to consume more of these through different means such as animal products. To effect this, numerous animal feeds are mixed with a little compound. By feeding on meat or any other animal product, people will have an increased amount of iodized content in their bodies. Cows, poultry, and pigs are the best sources of iodides.

In the industrial sector, specific iodized components are needed in manufacturing nylon. Nylon is a component of car tires. There are two versions of this namely nylon 6 and nylon 6.6. The previous component is the fiber in nature while the other is a polymer. They are used in the production of tires because of their cooling effect. Specifically, Cuprous iodide is commonly used to stabilize temperatures of up to 170 degrees Celsius. By preventing chemical cracking, tires last longer.

Iodides are also essential in manufacturing certain drugs. It is an active ingredient of numerous varieties of drugs such as coronary vasodilators, neuromuscular blocking agents and antispasmodics. Differently, organic compounds act as intermediate elements in the production of certain products. These are antibiotics, corticosteroids, and UV-B absorbers.

To improve the intake of nitrogen in nitrogenous fertilizers, iodized solutions mixed with this fertilizer helps. Alternatively, individuals can directly add this solution to the soil. Even though it does not provide nutrients directly, iodates help in the production of biomass. Biomass is composed of organic materials that are rich in nutrients. Researchers usually biofortify crops by spraying them with soluble iodized concentration.

Farmers need iodized chemicals to kill plant pathogens. These are disease-causing micro-organisms that hinder maximum productivity. Post-harvest treatment prevents the fungal infestation in tomatoes and potatoes.
