The Walnut Festival, which takes place each year in September, includes a 5K-10K run, a popular twilight parade, a carnival and much more.
If it is a jazz hotspot you want, check out Concord. This is where the famous jazz musician Dave Brubeck hailed from and a park in town was in fact named after the "Take Five" artist. It is in Concord as well that Concord Records was founded which initially catered to jazz artists only. The Concord Jazz Festival was consequently founded by Concord Record's founder Carl Jefferson. Since 1969 this has been a yearly event that is embraced by many as a highly popular tradition.
While it's far from Hollywood, the East Bay still is home to many interesting film festivals. The historic Orinda Theatre, for instance, has hosted both the Orinda Film Festival as well the California Independent Film Festival. The Danville International Children's Film Festival has been a popular annual event in the town of Danville. Of course, there are also several film festivals in Berkeley and Oakland.
There are annual county fairs on both counties and it includes several different events. Of course, the Contra Costa County Fair is sought after as well with its carnival, live music, cooking contests, a monkey show and plenty of livestock exhibits; however this fair usually lasts about four days rather than several weeks.
