What To Know About Speech Therapy Tampa

By Imelda Reid

Communication skills are a vital part of life. For most people spoken language is the primary means of communicating with those around them. Some people however have such severe problems that they need to use sign language or a picture system to indicate their needs. Yet even these methods need to be taught and every effort should be made to encourage the child or adult to talk.

Getting help is actually much easier than most people think. There are many excellent speech therapy Tampa practitioners. They may be part of a larger group or work independently. Either way they will be able to supple the assistance that a child or adult may need to ensure that they can communicate with the world around them. There are a number of ways to communicate including spoken language, sign language and a simple picture exchange system that is often very useful for young children with language delays.

Most problems become apparent by the age of two years. By that time a typically developing child should have a number of words in their vocabulary that they use on a daily basis. Many children begin to speak as young as a year old, but anywhere between one and two year old is considered within normal limits. Some children are just more motivated than others and have a strong desire to talk with those around them. Others are not as concerned and will not make the necessary effort until they are ready.

Using a simple bottle of bubbles is one of the best ways to help a child learn to control the air in their lungs. In order to blow a bubble the child must take a deep breath, and release a slow but constant stream of air. If it is too much or too little they will not achieve a bubble. This is a great motivator for many children and also allows siblings to help and participate.

Schools also provide speech and language services to young students. Larger districts often have their own therapist on staff who is available to work with the child on a daily basis. The child will have an Individualized Education Program written, often just called an IEP. This document is very important as it will outline the extent of the services and the goals for each school year.

The next step is to get a referral to a good speech therapist who is experienced working with children. They will need to complete an extensive evaluation, which is often done in the home to keep the child at ease and get the best results. A comprehensive report will then be written that outlines all the areas of concern and also the child's strengths. This is necessary to get a good program in place that will develop key skills and emphasise the individuals particular strengths.

Therapist provide both group and individual sessions to their clients. A combination of both is often the best plan. Children are typically motivated by others and being part of a language rich environment is very helpful. They will also have the opportunity to learn social skills such as taking turns and waiting in line.

Gradually with regular therapeutic sessions most children will begin to use spoken language as their primary means of communication. All efforts should be carefully coordinated between home, school and the therapist. Parents are key players are really need to educate themselves to help their child.
