The Experience Of Fishing In The Bahamas

By Kerri Stout

For whatever purpose, age or condition, fishing is a great past time activity for everyone. However, if it is Bahamas, then it becomes the perfect experience. Fishing in the Bahamas is the most famous water sport on the world. It accommodates everyone from first timers to experts.

You may use your own boat to fish at the Bahamas if you cross from Florida. Or you may choose to hire a fishing guide or a charter boat if you fly in. If deep sea fishing is your thing, going out to the open waters requires a huge boat. It should be at least 35 to 40 feet long to have enough room for your gear, friends and may be a shark.

Bahamas is known for Bone fishing. Bonefishes are created to be super-fast. They are a favorite meal for the sharks. Its tail which is forked powers its speed and enables it to hunt for its food. This species often travel in schools but only a fish at a time is caught. Live shrimps are often used as bait. When you catch a bonefish catch and release method is advised to conserve them.

It is not easy to fish at the reefs or bottom fishing as often known. There are breathtaking reefs in Bahamas including the third largest barrier reef in the world. To fish in the reefs, position the boat in such a way that it is in front or along the sides of the reef. Depending on what you prefer, you may choose to anchor or may be drift the boat.

When you drift, it is to make an effort to cover the reef entirely. Anchoring on the other hand is an opportunity to catch fish present in the bottom of the reef and not over. Remember to use gear that works best in catching fish from reefs. For example, the rod needs to be stout to support the large fish. If you are a beginner, it would be best to avoid the reefs.

Deep sea angling includes catching fish that live deep into the ocean beyond the areas that are lit by sunlight. This type of experience takes place further away from land at a depth of at least 30 meters below sea level. Deep sea or big game fishing is not your ordinary shallow water fish. In such water depths, deprived of sunlight and having many other challenges, that is where you will catch the big game such as sharks, tuna and marlin.

Such fish are never found anywhere close to the shoreline. Mackerel provides the best bait for these big game. In addition, it becomes difficult to catch them because of the resistance they can put in. They are known wrestlers and never go down without a good fight. For example, the Bluefin tunas are known to struggle for several hours. When they are tired, they struggle less and can then be reeled in.

It is always good to remember to conserve first then have fun later. Sharks can be really fun to catch but as a result of their slow reproduction process, it would be best to release them. The big game such as sharks are dangerous and can bite therefore do not be alone out in the sea. And keep away from the dolphins at all cost.
