Online Free New York Marriage Records

By Claire Dowell

Obtaining a license for marriage in New York requires the couple to apply for the said license from the nearest town or city clerk in the state. It will help if they get an application from the town or city clerk of the place where they are going to get married at. The couple must be both present to fill out and sign their application of the license in the presence of the clerk. This means that representatives cannot apply in behalf of the applicants. Not even a special power of attorney or notarized marriage license affidavits can be used to allow others to represent them during the application process. A blood test or premarital examination is not needed in New York.

Once the couple gets the license, they have to wait for 24 hours from the time it was issued before they can get married. If the couple is 16 years old or older, a special court order from the Supreme Court or County Court may waive the 24 hour period. For those younger than 16, the family court may issue the waiver instead. The marriage license is valid within 60 calendar days from the day it was issued. For same sex marriage applications they generally have to wait for 24 hours after receiving their license.

Applying for a marriage license will cost the couple $40 if they live outside of New York City but within the state of New York. The fee already includes the cost of the certificate of marriage registration. Once it is filed, the registration is sent within 15 calendar days to the couple. For couples who want to be wed in New York City, they will have to approach the nearest city clerk for the updated fees in getting a license to wed.

You may also obtain marriage records or copies of licenses for other purposes. There are various uses for a marriage document. The document can be used to complete a genealogical tree. Others may use it to prove their relation to certain family members such as in-laws or stepchildren. For legal purposes, it can be used as supporting papers for someone filing a divorce. Some may need it to verify their status as widow or widower to signify that they were once married to the deceased spouse.

To obtain a copy of such papers will cost you about $10. To get a copy of a wedding after 1996, you have to visit the New York City clerk. For weddings during 1930 to 1955, you may have more luck in the Manhattan office. However, obtaining records for genealogical purposes can be costly depending on the search period. The fee starts at $22 for a one to three year period search up to $202 for an 81 to 90 year period search. You can go to the Vital Records department to make a request to obtain the wedding record you need. Just a quick tip, include a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your application form and payment. That way, you'll get your results via mail and you won't have to go back to the vital records department just to get your certificates.

If you don't like the hassle or cost in getting information about weddings, you may try websites that offer free marriage records. These websites have the index of weddings online and can be searched easily using your computer. All you have to do is log on and input the names of the spouses. If you require physical or certified copies, the websites offer the services for a small fee.
