Home Security Tips For The Smart Homeowner

By Mark Mahaffey

The best home security systems for families on a budget will be those which offer the best protection with minimal equipment and monthly fees. When shopping for a frugal home alarm system, focus on the essentials, leaving the fancier options for another day.

For example, be sure that your home alarm system includes sensors for your doors and windows. These will let you know if someone tries to break into your home. If you know someone is entering your home, you will possibly be able to get away through a different door or window and run for safety. It is also smart to put a sign outside letting the crook know you have a system installed.

You should also consider putting in CCTV. With this type of camera system, you can be virtually present someplace that you are not physically present. This means that if you have areas around your house that are ideal for criminals to hide in, you can watch those areas without actually physically putting yourself in danger. Areas such as garages, storage sheds, around tall trees and root tops are places that provide hiding places for criminals.

Does your house have sliding doors? These can be very convenient, but unfortunately, they are easy for crooks to open. If they can destroy the latch on the door, they will be able to open it and come in. The solution is to put a stick of wood in the track, so that the door cannot be slid open.

Additionally, consider planting some plants with thorns and stickers on them. If you plant a very wide row of thorny plants, a burglar will think twice about trying to push his way through the row in order to get to your house. The key here is to make sure you plant the row very thick and wide.

Ornamental fencing may be a major part of the best home security system that you can put together. Consider putting in ornamental fencing. This type of tall fencing is very difficult to climb over and even harder to get through. If a criminal is faced with two houses to rob, and one has tall, ornamental fencing but the other does not, he will likely choose the house that does not have the fencing. He will probably reason that it is not worth going to all the extra trouble if he does not have to.
