Various Functions Of Rubber Gasket For Aircraft

By Aimee Schwartz

A machine is composed of various parts. It would not be able to function if one component is missing. Most of the time, people see the machine as a whole, but you should also take notice of all the parts that makes the performance possible. One part would be the gasket which people do not give much attention to without knowing the important function it serves for the rest of the machinery.

These are the ones that are considered a staple component for a machinery. Since it is widely use and the machines serve different purposes, you can easily deduce that the function and the types of gaskets vary as well. As you can notice there are specific types for every type of machinery. One example would be the rubber gaskets for aircraft. It is also used for other kinds of moving machines.

The shape of these parts vary as well. This is to make sure that they can function as intended. It is not limited to circular forms. Manufacturers of these things have also created customized ones for construction purposes. There are designs that sometimes require more precise seals that have an unusual design. And that is when the customized gasket comes in.

Gaskets are made out of various materials. Before, they made use of wood. But since this it is ineffective, the search for another material to be used brought them to the utilization of metal. There are still risks involved in this choice. And that is when they tried to use rubber and synthetic materials to be used as the main ingredient for the making of a gasket.

There are several functions for the gaskets. The first one is the sealing function. This is the reason why it is also known as a seal. It can protect lines and wires as well as pipes from the changing temperature in the outside environment. This might not be safe for these pipes especially those that are located in the inner workings of the plane. The altitude can sometimes mess the temperature up.

It can also act as a separator and compressor. If this is the function, it needs to be attached by using an adhesive. In situations like these, both the gasket and the adhesive must be suited for the difference in temperature. It must not be affected by it, otherwise it would be useless in a few minutes since it would not stick anymore.

There are times when leaks happen. And if it is not prevented, it will surely cause untold damage to the entire aircraft. And if it happens while the plane is still up in the air, it would surely be a big problem. As a precaution for these events, gaskets are fastened around pipes that contains fluids to prevent any type of leakage and damages.

Rubber is the most known ingredient of the complicated mix. However, there are still other things added to the mixture. Rubber will not suffice if you are aiming for durability and longevity. And for this reason, there are also other chemicals added to it to achieve the desired result.

The engine of the aircraft is not the only place where you can find a gasket. They are present in various areas around the body of the aircraft. The function depends according to where it is placed. Based on this, it is safe to say that the material is versatile and dependable and is the main reason why it is used immensely.
