When Do The Big Bucks Start Coming In For A Billing Career?

By Tina Barry

Finding a job in medical billing should be easy today. There is a 17% shortage of qualified workers. Most physicians are looking for qualified medical billers and cannot find any. They are instead choosing to outsource their billing to companies located in the USA and overseas. If you are trying to find a job in medical billing, it should not be that difficult to find. However, are you qualified enough to have employers calling you back? Are you employable at this stage of your life?

You may come to realize that a lot of business owners today are looking to save money. Saving money means having trained workers that put more money in your pockets. If you are thinking about a career in medical billing, then you are off to a good start. You can easily find a medical billing program that fits your schedule. Many billing programs are taught in a classroom setting and in an internet setting.

The proof is in the pudding. The fact is that your boss will determine your salary based on how much money you can make the medical practice. If you cannot save him time and money, you may not be worth a six figure salary. In fact, you may be worth far less to him because of your inability to bill correctly. Many medical billers today are having a hard time learning ICD-10. Many men and women find themselves going back to school for additional training. If you already know ICD-9, you can probably learn ICD-10 in around 6 months. However, you still will not be an expert.

In order to see how you stand out amongst other billers, you are going to need to have lots of experience. When you are working with other coders, you learn a lot. Coders with 5 years of more coding experience seem to do well with getting nice payouts on claims. They seem to document information correctly and know what the insurance companies are looking for. You may land a job with a hospital or physician's office before doing an internship. However, you will most likely not last too long on the job. Your inexperience will show and a more skilled worker will often replace you.

Choosing a coding career takes time and attention to detail. Expect to work long hours and to constantly be training. You should attend a medical billing workshop at least once a month in order to keep your skills up to date. Medical billing changes on a year to year basis. Make sure to have the correct books in your library if you are reading about coding. It is important to make sure that you are ready for this career. It will require a lot of your time. It is not uncommon for billers to work some 8 to 12 hours a day coding.
