One must be able to follow technical plans and excellent practical skills are mandatory.

Certain professional and academic qualifications are needed for one to start working in electrotechnical field. In the United Kingdom, one of the entry requirements is an industry-recognized level 3 qualification. Qualifications can be earned as one continues with their job. Specialization is a specific area in this field is also possible if one undertakes further training. There are many fields of specialization in which one may specialize. One of the routes into this profession is undertaking a few years of electrotechnical apprenticeship. To be better placed, the apprenticeship training should be combined with college education and where possible, working on the job. It takes between two to four years for one to be fully qualified. Whatever range of apprenticeships available in an area is dependent on local job market.

Local colleges offer full- and part-time courses which can be taken by anybody with interest in entering the profession. College training is often a background upon which one can build further.

Electricians work in a wide range of areas. As part of their job, they install, inspect, and test equipment for optimal performance. They also troubleshoot electrical problems and fix them when they are found. There are different categories of workers in the electrotechnical career. Some of categories are highway systems, maintenance, machine repair and rewind, electrotechnical panel building, and installation electricians.
