Cultural Practices In Arab Marriage

By Debra Gibson

The fundamental social unit in the world is the family. The wedding always starts any family. Different societies have their cultural means of initiating and conducting marriages. The Arab community is one of the few societies that have been able to maintain their traditional takes on marriages and below is info on maintaining Arab marriage.

Selection of couples is a task of parents. The sons parents will identify the perfect match for their son. The son may have an option of giving a hint on the type they will prefer. The parents of the daughter, on the other hand, are allowed to accept any advances made by any family in as much as the prospective man is right for their daughter.

Marriage is viewed as an agreement of union between two families. It is for this reason that a marriage contract is established between them. Of the many items that may be found in a marriage contract is the pride price. It is usually a gift from the grooms family to the bride as an appreciation sign for giving them their daughter, and its value depends on the two families understanding.

The contract also lies down the roles of this two in the matrimonial union. The fundamental function of the groom is to head all the house activities and also provide for the family needs. The wife is the homemaker. She will ensure that everything in the house is in order. She has to make sure the food is ready, the husbands clothes are clean and many other house chores.

A ceremony marks every marriage. At this point people make merry. There is also the long awaited moment of checking the brides purity. In this case, her hymen is broken by the groom in the presence of their mothers. The stains are then displayed to the public. These days this has not been a priority for many as it is viewed to be optional.

In marriage life, the Arab woman is taught to respect the husband in all the decisions that are to be made. It is the role of a woman to ensure that the man is pleased with anything happening in the house. She is not supposed to go anywhere or receive any visitors without the consent of their husband. The choice of wife to be working relies on the man.

The Arabs are guided by the Quran that allows for a man to have up to 4 wives. A man may opt to get another wife if the first wife cannot conceive or if there is a chance of divorce that the couple may wish to avoid. The woman is expected to accept the co-wife though it is not common in many instances.

Though rare, cases of divorce exist in these marriages. Upon a divorce, the wife is not allowed to leave alone and thus goes back to her parents house or any other male family member. There is a divorce fee stipulated in the marriage agreement that the husband pays. In addition to this, the husband has to keep on catering for the wifes maintenance. The children remain with the father as stipulated by the law.
