Civil Engineering as a specialty within the profession of engineering has many engineers who have high levels of specialization in it. This field deals with constructing, maintaining, and designing the physical and natural environment. Some common products of the field are bridges, canals, dams, roads, railways, and buildings. The terms coastal protection and sea defense are used in certain jurisdiction to mean defense and protection against flooding and erosion respectively. This field has seen a lot of expansion from traditional coastal defense operations to cover coastal management. Now, it deals with techniques employed in the reclamation of land along coastal areas.

The construction subspecialty deals with development of sites based on hydraulic, structural, environmental, and geotechnical engineering. It also handles how materials are transported and plans the execution of projects. There are a lot of great risks involved in the construction specialty when compared to other divisions. Thus, the role of engineers in this field is more business-related. They evaluate logistical operations, monitor prices of supplies, and draft and review contracts.

Earthquake subspecialty is involved with the designing of structures so that they can be able to withstand exposures to hazardous earthquakes. This subspecialty often comes under a larger subspecialty called structural engineering. The goal of the earthquake subspecialty is to understand how structures on a shaky ground interact, foresee impact of earthquakes, ensure that structures designed and constructed in areas prone to earth movements comply with building codes.

Sanitary or environmental subdivision is concerned with the treatment of wastes of various forms such as chemical, thermal, and biological. It is also concerned with remediation of contaminated sites and purification of water and air. Sites get contaminated due to wasted disposal or accidental contamination. Many topics are covered under this subdivision including waste water treatment, water purification, hazardous waste management, and solid waste treatment. Others include air pollution and pollutant transport.

The various subspecialties share knowledge and technical knowhow. For instance, knowledge used in one field can be used in several other subspecialties. That is the reason an engineer trained in one field can also work in other fields with the need of little or no adjustment in their training.
