Important Information On Ipl Treatment Sterling VA Patients Need To Understand

By Kenneth McDonald

There are numerous cosmetic treatments that can be used in the management of skin conditions. One of the most popular (and effective) options is intense pulse light therapy (or ipl). This is a non-invasive, non-ablative therapy that uses a pulsed light to alter the appearance of the skin. If they plan on having ipl treatment sterling VA residents should know several things in advance.

There are numerous conditions that can be treated using ipl based treatments. They include vascular lesions such as spider veins, rosacea and rosy cheeks among others. Others are facial lines, wrinkles, age marks, acne, stretch marks and freckles. Serial therapies may be administered to rejuvenate aged, wrinkled skin and give it a more youthful appearance. This is also known as photorejuvenation.

The mechanism of intense pulsed light is similar to that of laser. When light energy is directed at a given target on the skin, it is absorbed by specific cells known as chromophores. The light energy is subsequently converted to heat energy that causes damage to the dermal layer of the skin. The major difference with the laser is the fact that intense pulsed light sources have several wavelengths while laser therapies use only one wavelength.

The specialist will only recommend this therapy after they have examined you thoroughly and had a discussion with you on the benefits as well as the risks associated with it. As part of the preparation, you will be advised to avoid exposure to direct sunlight so as to increase the chances of success. Another important precaution that should be undertaken during the therapy is to have protective eye wear.

The therapy itself is usually straightforward with one session being conducted in a period of 20 to 30 minutes. Most people will see a change immediately. The average patient will require four to six sessions for maximal results to be seen. About three weeks should be allowed between sessions to allow the cells of the skin to regenerate. One can return to work immediately after therapy.

Side effects associated with the therapy are few and rare. Pain is the commonest complaint. It is attributable to irritation of nerve endings in the epidermis and dermis as well as direct cell injury by the heat generated. Application of topical analgesic agents to the area before treatment usually helps take care of this problem. Of almost equal frequency in occurrence is a feeling of soreness in the area that has been treated. The soreness usually resolves within a few hours.

Ipl has several other indications apart from the treatment of skin conditions. Hair removal is one of these indications. When one directs the pulsed light to a hair follicle the affected hair strand will fall off. Although the strand is not completely removed, it does not grow back. The parts of the body on which that is done include the chest, face, neck, the legs and the bikini line among others.

The use of IPL therapy is set to be more widespread in future thanks to research activities around this area. The treatment has shown great promise as a therapy for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These two are among the most difficult skin cancers to treat. Devices that can be used at home by the patient have now been developed eliminating the need for repeated clinic visits.
