Tips On Improving Educators Professional Development

By Laura Watson

Students must have high quality teachers in order for them to learn and receive good education. But people usually forget that educators also need to have training and preparation in order for them to teach their students efficiently. Teachers must be capable in adapting to changing times by developing new techniques or ideas for teaching.

Unfortunately, areas that have conflicts, with low income or are remote needs competent teachers more for the children there. School district administrators have been providing workshops and seminars for them but the way they conduct these are usually ineffective. So here are some tips on improving educators professional development.

You must give them access to great quality development workshops and training to make them feel professionally competent. They might not know how to handle children with various emotional and academic needs that they are teaching. Help them by letting them use instructional practices which produces great results like giving feedback, precision in explanations and formative assessment.

At least focus on 1 or 2 instructional practices which you want them to refine, improve or learn to make them simple. Choose which one you would want them to learn by receiving inputs from your educators. Communicate properly to every level of your organization the instructional practices to be learned and the corresponding expectations.

You must provide them with an ongoing support by making sure they are using the teaching techniques and practices taught to them. They must receive guidance and feedback through observing how they implement what they learned in class. Proper coaching and not just monitoring and data collection must be done.

Collaboration between teachers and peer support should also be encouraged. Teachers could take turns visiting each others classrooms and give feedback if he is using the techniques they have learned. Sharing of knowledge and trust between them should be developed as well.

Recruit great trainers with considerable skill and experience in teaching. He must also have experienced the things he teaches and does not only base on what is written on the manual. He should be an example to the educators by practicing the things he teaches during the workshop so he could be followed.

The development seminars must be scheduled properly so that the educators will be informed in advance and they would have time in preparing and setting up their own schedules. They have their own life to take care of as well as a family they worry about. Not being able to announce the date of training or informing them on the same day would make them lose concentration on the lessons and think on other things that they have scheduled to do that day.

Understand that these things take time and changes do not happen right away. Avoid changing your goals in just a year by changing the instructional practices you want to implement. You must realize that they will need continued support even in the following year for implementing the changes. This is an ongoing process and letting them attend a few seminars a year is not enough if no follow up and feedback is given. Effective professional development can improve your teachers and in turn will make your school better.
