IEP Help For Parents In Managing The Process

By Amy Ward

It can be challenging for parents to get children with learning disabilities the kind of individualized education programs that suits their needs and situations. Dealing with the bureaucracy often leaves adults feeling frustrated and inadequate. There is some good news though. Constructive IEP help for parents is available from others who have survived their school systems and are sharing the things they learned.

These individuals advise others to arm themselves with as much data as they can when it comes to the matter of their children's rights. This is more important than almost anything else. You can find information online, from library books, and by joining support groups both online and locally. Talking to other parents who are going through some of the same challenges you face every day is empowering.

You have the right to request a copy of an IEP in advance of any meeting. This way you will have plenty of time to read it and take it to a professional, such as a doctor, a neurologist, a lawyer, or an advocate, for her to read through as well. When you get to the meeting you will be ready with questions and comments about what is in the report. It's also important to get a copy of your child's evaluations in advance of a meeting so you can consult any professionals about the contents.

You should not feel pressured to sign off on the report at the time of the meeting. It is your right to take it home with you and look it over before you sign it. Changes are often made to the report during the meeting. It's not unusual to find incorrect listings, factual errors, and omissions in the report you receive.

You can always return the report with your signature after you feel comfortable everything is in order. All communications you have with administration through the mail should be certified. That way you know for a fact the school got the information because you can see who signed for it.

You also have the right to bring a professional with you to a meeting or to introduce a letter from a professional into the meeting records. A lot of times bringing a professional is helpful because they speak the same language as the school administrators. They may be able to get a point across better than you could have.

It is acceptable to bring a tape recorder to the meeting. Most administrators and teachers don't object, especially when you let them know in advance. Tape recording is a better idea than note taking. With the recorder on, you can focus all your attention on what is being said.

It's important to meet with the classroom teacher at the beginning of the school year. You should have a copy of the IEP to give to the teacher because that may be the only way she will see it. You should feel free to request a meeting anytime you have concerns about your child's needs being met.
