Home Applications Of Spray Foam Insulation Raleigh NC

By Robert Clark

Spray foam insulation (SFI) kits are certainly a great way to reduce energy consumption and lower those utility bills. It may sometimes tend to be a confusing topic but it would be advisable to know the basics before you decide to apply it to your home. Today, about 70% of residential energy bills are attributed to heating. What most homes do not know is that most of this energy is wasted because it escapes through cracks in the walls, basements, attics, ceilings and windows. And by investing in quality cracks in Spray Foam Insulation Raleigh NC, heating and cooling your home will be so much more cost efficient.

There are two main types; open cell and closed cell (this can also be broken down and classified as low, medium and high-density). The less expensive open cell protection uses fewer chemicals and can be a very effective air barrier, but does not act as a water vapor barrier. Typically it is used for indoor protection, and can also be a great sound barrier. Closed cell has a more dense and compact structure, and can also be used a water vapor barrier. Due to its structure, it can be used both indoors and outdoors (including roofs).

The practice forms an important aspect to the achievement of thermal comfort for the buildings occupants, and thermal SFI reduces unwanted heat loss, and reduces the energy requirements of cooling and heating systems. It is in essence, the material property being used to contain the loss of heat.

How Does It Work? Actually, applying this type of protection is quicker and easier than you may think. As the liquid is sprayed, it quickly transforms into hard, thick foam. It can be used anywhere, however, because of its flammability, it requires an ignition source if installed near a flame source (such as a water tank or furnace).

Polyurethane is easy to apply, lightweight in structure and can cover large areas quickly and efficiently. These properties render it a profoundly cost effective solution for many commercial requirements. The FIS application uses rigid polyurethane foam which sprays to a fine cellular structure with high compressive strength and good adhesion and insulating qualities. Many of these spraying techniques and materials do not contain or use any CFCs.

The kits would usually come with instructions and the necessary hardware. Some of the components include a garden hose looking gun and a hose, some tips, nozzles, goggles and gloves. These set of appliances make insulating your home as easy as watering your backyard. The installation process usually requires minimal set-up of the equipment and normally just requires careful aimed spraying.

Fiberglass still allows air to pass through, defeating the purpose of its installation in the first place. Because they are made of a combination of old materials, they may not meet changing building codes in your area. While spray foam protection stays in place and is permanent, fiberglass and cellulose can sag over time, diminishing its overall performance.

Keeping your home insulated is equal to good home maintenance. SFI kits are an efficient way to fill in those gaps and cracks that may appear in existing homes. It is a very cost effective method that lasts for years.
