Basic Information About Bait And Tackle

By Shirley Phillips

Bait is any substance like food used to attract and catch animals like fish. Examples of them are worms, insects and smaller fishes but there are also artificial ones that are now commonly used by fishermen. It is becoming common because they can be used again and designed to resemble the appearance and movement of prey.

Baits and the other fishing gears and equipment are called together with nets, reels, rods, sinkers, lines, hooks and others. Bait and tackle Dryden Ontario Canada have shops selling them and in other places too. Here are some things you should know about the mentioned tackles if you plan in learning recreational fishing or for other reasons.

Hooks are used to catch fish by impaling the mouth or snagging the body sometimes and these have been used for a long time by fishermen. They could hold also different types of artificial and natural lures and baits. Hooks have different designs, shapes, sizes and materials used to make them depending on the intended purpose.

Lines are cords where hooks are attached to one end and the rods and reels on the other. Using them to catch fish is called angling and they were historically made from leaves, plant stalk, horse hair, silk thread, linen or silk. Modern ones are created from artificial materials including dyneema, dacron, polyethylene and nylon.

Plummets or sinkers are weights used for sinking lures and baits faster during angling or to cast them at greater range. They are made of lead traditionally but was banned by a few countries because of its tendency to cause lead poisoning when ingested. The weights vary depending on the kind of fishes you are wishing to capture.

Rods are used together with line, sinker and hook and there were made from reed, bamboo or ash wood while the handles were wood, cork or wrapped cane. Modern ones are equipped with guides and reel to stow lines. Their difference with poles are that their tips are where the lines are attached to and they do not have a reel.

Reels are devices for deploying and retrieving of lines using a spool mounted on an axle and are used in angling. They are usually used with rods but some specialized ones are mounted on crossbows or to boat gunwales or transoms. They usually have fittings aiding in casting for distance and accuracy perfect for competitive casting.

Nets are meshes which were formed through knotting thin threads but ancient ones were created from cocoon silk, leaves and plain stalk. Hard nets are those held open through a loop attached to the end of their long handle to sweep fishes up near water surface. Meanwhile, cast nets are those round ones with attached weights that is thrown by fishermen then hauled back in.

These items could be stored inside tackle boxes when not being used by the fisher and some have small trays meant for smaller tackles. These trays have lids to prevent small tackles from getting mixed with other and could be detached sometimes. They would then become separate and can be bought when a small tackle is what you need.
