How A Teambuilding Workshop Can Improve Productivity

By Brenda Ellis

Modern enterprises have long abandoned the idea of a top down structure where there is a very well defined chain of command. Instead, employees work as teams and they take responsibility for their output as a team. In many cases teams are allowed to make certain decisions themselves and it is even possible that the leadership of the team changes. This can work only if all the members of the group respect each other and subscribe to the common goals of the team. If this is not the case, a teambuilding workshop may be the answer.

Companies embark upon team building activities for many different reasons. In some cases these exercises serve simply to motivate the members of the team and to become acquainted with each other. In many cases, however, the purpose of such exercises is to improve communication, to resolve conflict or to impart new skills and knowledge. There can be no argument, however, that team building exercises have become very popular.

The ever increasing popularity of team building excursions have given birth to a huge industry. Team building organizers charge hefty fees to take teams on their excursions, often to expensive and exotic locations. Even venues have seen the potential profits in catering specifically for this market. They readily invest in equipment and facilities to attract corporate clients and to cash in on the trend.

Companies need to be careful when appointing team building contractors. Far too many operators have no formal qualifications in team dynamics or any other field related to effective team building exercises. They are merely event organizers and treat these excursions as they would a a short holiday. Professional team building managers will be able to provide references and a solid record of success in helping teams to perform better.

It is vitally important to make sure that the organizers of team building exercises are properly briefed. They cannot put together suitable programs or plan activities unless they know exactly what the intended purpose of the exercise is. They also need to know the profiles of the various team members in order to develop a program that will be suitable for their ages, physical abilities and interests.

Clients should insist that team building organizers present them with a detailed proposal regarding the exercise. In this proposal, they should not only concentrate on logistical matters such as transport, the venue, catering and the budget, but also on how the objectives of the exercise will be achieved. Where possible, the client should be allowed to exercise certain options regarding the program.

A proper team building exercise should contain elements of evaluation. Not only should the members of the team give feedback to their colleagues, but the contractor should also provide a detailed report. This report should be viewed as confidential and should be honest about the ways in which individual team members contributed towards or thwarted the efforts to strengthen the team as a whole.

Teams that work well together can be extremely effective and productive. Unfortunately the opposite is also true. Ineffective teams can hamper the productivity of the entire enterprise. In many cases, team building excursions can help to create highly efficient teams.
