Hosting Classic Poetry Readings Los Angeles

By Eric Morris

Literary entertainment can take many forms. Whether an author reading from a newly released book, a featured poet at a bookstore, poets reading at an open-mic or poetry slam, all offer a great deal of fun for literary enthusiasts. When it comes to the best classic poetry readings Los Angeles, these are often those presented in the classical style.

Most poetry events are open to the public, though there are some in the classical genre which are closed readings. For, most poets working in this area prefer a quiet venue when reading for others, or when writing. Whereas, those attending these events often know the difference between poetry styles and are often disappointed when a reading involves other styles.

Most of those whom hold true to classical roots feel that the intelligence and style can not be compromised by mixing the work with other styles. As such, it is important that the host of these readings are careful to keep the reading focused solely on classical poetry. Otherwise, classical poetry lovers may very well turn to other classical readings and venues.

For those whom love classical poetry, it is important that when hosting this type of reading, one does so in a venue that is accommodating and convenient. In addition, as classical poetry is often a quieter event than others, Sunday afternoons at a library, coffee shop or tea house are often considered great venue choices. Whereas, those wishing to hear and read a variety of different styles may want to host events at a coffee shop or outdoor patio of a restaurant.

Depending on the number of poets at an event, hosts can either provide a sign-up sheet or host a storm the mike type of event. In the latter, anyone feeling the urge to read simply jumps on stage. Whereas, when a sign up sheet is involved, the host generally introduces each poet whom reads in succession according to the number next to the name.

Regardless of the venue, organization is a key factor in planning and hosting a successful literary event. While true with all events, this is especially true when it comes to poets. In addition, venues need to be quieter when it comes to open mics and features, as it can often be difficult to hear if seating is far away from the stage.

One way hosts can make an event more entertaining is to play around with the lighting and sound before and during an event. For, the better the sound, often the more the audience will pay attention. Whereas, using the lighting in creative ways can often make the host and poets more interesting.

When providing a theme for reading, poets can not only write about new topics but can also determine whether or not the reading will be enjoyable. For, there are some poets which might be uncomfortable with specific themes. Although, most poets are often extremely open minded and are willing to listen to the work of other poets regardless of personal biases or beliefs.
