Forget Spring Cleaning - Design Your Home For Year-Round Cleanliness

By Vickie Daeley

As we transition out of winter and into to spring, this is the time of year we think about spring cleaning. While giving everything in your home a thorough cleaning and assessing your items is always a good idea, what if you home always looked as though it were fresh from a spring clean? With the help of a great interior designer, this dream can become a reality.

We can clean and organize and make our homes look fantastic, but keeping it that way is often a huge challenge. It's not that we don't want to stay organized, we simply either don't have time to stay on top of the mess or perhaps we don't really know how to tackle the influx of clutter. Sometimes we simply need to reprogram our thinking and make a commitment to follow some basic organizational rules. If we can follow the clutter-reduction rules, it is easier to keep our homes organized.

For example, whenever you get something new, such as an item of clothing, find one or two pieces of clothing and donate them to a charity shop. If you buy a new set of sheets or a new pair of shoes, get rid of an old set or an old pair. The same rule applies to larger items, such as new furnishings. On the day the new items are delivered, call a favorite charity and set up a time for them to come and take some old furniture or perhaps sell it online or via a consignment shop.

Walk into any house in America and you can almost instantly see that much of the clutter in our lives consists of paper. We get bills, junk mail, school papers, magazines and a million other bits of paper. Obviously, some of these documents must be stored, but you can scan many items and then keep them digitally on your computer. This includes everything from scanning bills to scanning business cards and even children's artwork. Using online banking and requesting paperless invoices for all of your bills is another way to reduce the paper in your home. Make a commitment to immediately throw away any junk mail or flyers. When it comes to magazines, read them and then donate them to your doctor's office. Even better, subscribe to your favorite periodicals electronically and use your tablet or e-reader for these items.

Of course, there are many items that we cannot throw away, but we also don't simply want them crammed into closets, sitting on countertops or hidden in the garage. This is where a designer comes in. This trained professional not only is capable of making your living spaces beautiful, they can transform your home into a storage Mecca. A designer can redo your closets, create attractive shelving units and come up with other clever ideas for storage.

Once your home has great storage options, it's a snap to keep everything tidy. Deep cleaning is easier, simply because you don't have mounds of clutter to tackle first. You also will find it easier to manage clutter if you combine this new design with the aforementioned rules. So this year, rather than spring cleaning, consider a spring redesign that will keep your home looking its best throughout the year.
