You should be aware of what the previous finish coat was used on the said floorboard. This is so that you can use the same type of coat to refinish the said flooring. Remember that what you used first will be the coat you will use forever. Otherwise, you will be asked to sand it down to the core.

If the finish you used for the flooring is a wax finish, then you got to determine its type of finish first. You can do so by using a solvent. You just have to use a cloth dipped in mineral spirits to wipe a small area. If the finish comes off with a brown or yellow residue on the cloth, then the finish used is a paste wax.

When paste wax is used, you do not have to sand it down if you want to use another finish. The waxing of the flooring is a different method compared to the others. You should ask a professional to determine what you have to do to deal with the finishing of the paste wax.
