Design Ideas For A Budget

By Jennifer Willingham

Not everyone puts the same level of importance on interior design. And if something is not especially important to you, you probably will not put as much effort into it. But even if you do not care too much about it, you likely would not deny that a well-designed interior can set a positive atmosphere that helps you relax and makes a positive first impression for visitors. Even if you do not want to spend large amounts of time, money or effort sprucing up your home's interior, there are some simple, cheap improvements that can be made.

In a photo or other image, the background can set the tone for the whole thing. As the backdrop of a home, a new coat of paint on the walls can make the whole room feel fresh and lively. You might be surprised by just how much of a difference it can make.

Painting can be costly in both time and money. So if you do not want to redo an entire room, sometimes just painting a single wall can create effective contrast.

If painting an entire wall is still too much for your time or budget, you might instead opt for highlighting a few features, such as door or window frames, or the door itself. Even something as simple as stylish new wallpaper can drastically alter the mood for the better.

Interior design is a 3-Dimensional project. Do not forget that the floors and ceilings are canvases as well. Ceilings are mostly featureless, save for lighting, but you can take advantage of that. You can use stylish, affordable light fixtures to draw attention to the otherwise unassuming surface.

The light itself is what creates the atmosphere, though. You should decide on the mood you want to create and then place the light sources accordingly. Softer light placed at lower angles can create relaxing, romantic feel, while using brighter, natural light usually creates a cheerful atmosphere. Take into account the brightness of the bulbs and the placement and styles of the lamps.

The floors should not ignored either. An underrated way to add character without replace the carpet or hard surface would be to use an area rug. A good rug can draw attention to the main area of the room, where it will probably rest under a feature such as a coffee table.

To save even more money, you can try repurposing the items you already own. If you have things in storage that you don't know what to do with, try seeing them in unconventional ways. A old chest, for example, might work as a great coffee table with storage space. Or an old cabinet might be put to good use as a stand for a TV in a bedroom.

Once you are settled on the style and feel of your design scheme, the next phase is to keep it looking great by keeping it clean. Clutter can be the greatest enemy of a beautiful home. Items tend to pile up from day to day life, but you can reduce the amount of clutter by getting rid of anything you don't need and then organizing what is left with storage bins or shelving.
