Texas Continuing Education Units: A Professional Development Guide For The Novice Educators

By Walter Bailey

In his book titled 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, ' Steven Covey has 'sharpening the saw' as his seventh habit. For educators, this habit could be defined as enlarging your experience or learning new skills or having once used successful teaching ideas recalled through professional development activities. In essence, for you as a young teacher who wants to provide the best for your classes, Texas continuing education units should form your core strategy of competence.

What is the need for teacher's professional development? It is out of doubt that a vast majority of our Primary-School-educators especially English educators are not aware of communicative English Language skills. Exploring quality issues is quite dark to them. One can always wonder where the educators are. Where are the students? Where is the curriculum?"

It is also true that primary educators are supposed to take one-year intensive training under Primary Training Institute (PTIs). However, we find very little change or no change in their class room teaching after having this training in terms of considering pedagogy. As a result, students are being deprived of the real taste of teaching and achieve very little from their desired competencies.

At the end of it all, a teachers' PD training should be made fun. After all, when a thing like teaching is made enjoyable to do, the teachers understand that they can make education an enjoyable experience for youngsters. In this process, a teacher can also learn the newest classroom concepts and technologies that are so popularly followed in the schools today. Proper career guidance can also help educators in getting a better pay and promotion.

Story building is another important area for the students to enjoy and learn. It helps them to broaden their imagination and create moral values into their minds and attitudes. We know that children are born with innate qualities. To sprout their latent talents, we need to provide them with excellent opportunities and positive environments.

On the personal front, be sure to adopt a set of procedures at each professional development opportunity you attended and always take notes. Apart from taking notes, you should also red-pen and list things you need to do on your return to school. While at school, prioritize the ideas from your action notes and create an action plan.

Your action plan should include some or all of the following: Write a teaching worksheet, write an assessment task, plan to use a new teaching strategy with your class and write a reminder to use a long-forgotten teaching idea/strategy. In the action plan, you can include writing up a report of that teaching strategy and buying resources and books for staff library. Finally, write up the report to be published for your staff on what you had learned.

The English educators should be subjected to high-quality training with the light of communicative approach. Doing so will help them to teach the English Language in the classroom more effectively and more appropriately. English educators should involve their students, by giving them individual work, pair work, group work, different games, and riddles, making interesting stories giving their voices, etc.
