Useful And Essential Facts About Weathervane

By Charles Mitchell

Weather is an important aspect in a majority of human activities. That is why it is important to know prevailing weather in a place. To help people plan their activities better, weather stations have been set up to provide weather predictions. Weather forecasting is accomplished through the use of very complex methods, equipment, and skills. Whereas weather stations forecast weather, some devices are used to tell the prevailing weather at that time. This is what Weathervane are all about.

For example knowing the speed and direction of weather using a wind sock and wind vane respectively is possible. A wind vane is also known as a weather vane or a weathercock and indicating the direction of wind is its use. This equipment is also utilized for ornamental purposes besides showing the direction of weather. Placing it at the highest spot of a structure like a house is done for decorative purposes.

As a matter of fact, vanes are often used decoratively even though they are functional too. When the device is used as decoration, they feature traditional cockerel design with compass points shown by letters that are attached to it. Ships, horses and arrows are additional motifs in common use. Pointers are not incorporated in all kids of vanes. The design of vanes allows the had to point in the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Although vanes were created hundreds of years ago, they still find use currently. The first text that talks about this device as a wind-observing fan dates back to the 139 BCE in China. Away from references from texts, a real wind vane was developed and installed on top of the tower of winds in Greek which ages back to 50 BCE.

Many people around the world have proceeded to develop very big wind vanes so that they can win the Guinness World Record.. The largest wind vane ever recorded in the Guinness World Records is the Tio Pepe Sherry found in Jerez, Spain. The Montague city in Michigan has laid another claim to the World Guinness Record for the largest vane too. Its height is 48 feet.

Another major contender for the world record for the largest weather vane is in Whitehorse, Yukon. The vane in Whitehorse is made of a retired Douglas DC-3 CF-CPY that is placed on top of a swiveling support. The vane is at Yukon Transportation Museum next to the Whitehorse International Airport. Pilots rely on this vane to tell the direction of wind before takeoff and landing.

The vane in Whitehorse, despite being huge, is effective. It can only rotate at a 5 knot wind speed. There are numerous tourists attracted to the vane. Furthermore, the local residents like passing near it and viewing its huge size.

From the text above, it is clear that vanes can be made from any material and with any design. They can also be made to any size one wishes them to be. For the wind vane to be able to respond to weak winds, it must be designed, positioned, and anchored well. This becomes even more important when the device is very big.
