Why Granite Is The Best For Creating A Headstone

By Nora Jennings

Many people might have taken a walk in the cemetery and have seen most of the headstones made of a variety of materials. One can notice gravestones of sandstone, slate or even bronze. Granite however, is the most common material used to make a headstone. This can be attributed to its many benefits that make people prefer it as their material of choice.

Gravestones serve as important reminders of the deceased which can go on for generations. The need for a durable material is thus needed to preserve it for years to come. Granite happens to be very durable and is very resistant to weathering and stands up to breakages. This is in contrast to materials such as sandstone and slate which are not very durable. Therefore, granite is ideal as the tombstone can be preserved for years to come.

Versatility of the granite stone is also another one of its benefits. The material can be etched, sandblasted and carved with excellent results. This is possible due to their hard nature and thus are able to withstand pressurized air from sandblasting or melting from laser etching. Most materials can withstand these processes and the few that can are very limited in resources.

Everyone wants the tombstones of their loved ones to be as presentable as possible. This means the materials have to be very beautiful. Sandstones and other materials usually give a dull appearance and it is made worse when they fade over time. Granite however, has different minerals that compose it and it has flecks of blue, green, grey or gold. This makes granite very beautiful and coupled with its high quality, makes for one presentable tombstone.

The earth has got granite in abundance and means the cost for the natural resource is low. This makes granite very affordable than other materials. Bronze and marble for example can cost a fortune and this can be very inconvenient especially if one has a limited budget. Some materials are also affordable but do not have the same quality to rival granite.

Granite is a very flexible material and this makes it very easy to work with. Therefore, one is able to get different varieties in shape and size and it is easy to include designs on the gravestones. This makes granite have a huge variety of options as compared to other materials which can prove hard to have many shapes, sizes and designs.

Another advantage of granite is that it requires very little maintenance. Due to it being highly resistant and durable in nature, it is able to resist adverse effects of environmental conditions. Thus one does not have to frequently look over the gravestone or hire someone to do so. In addition, granite offers some kind of simple yet elegant or sophisticated appeal.

Granite has a very low value making it relatively cheap. This is an important attribute as it prevents the likelihood of thieves targeting a gravestone. The case would be very different if a valuable material like bronze was used.
