Facts About Behavior Intervention Specialist

By Anthony Roberts

Behavior intervention specialists are practitioners in the field of psychology who specialize in facilitating positive and healthy behavior through the elimination of destructive and negative conduct. Usually, they work with communities, groups, or individuals. They aim at replacing disruptive, negative, and harmful behaviors with positive ones. A behavior intervention specialist needs to understand the condition of the client first before offering help.

The job involves interacting with groups or people or individuals and offering help that facilitate healthy functioning in the setting under consideration. The specific behaviors that disrupt or make it impossible for one to function properly in both public and private settings are targeted. These behaviors make it hard for one to function in settings such as workplaces, counseling centers, health agencies, and schools among others.

The client population being considered usually determine the kind of behaviors that warrant intervention. For instance, factors that may cause disruptive behavior in school settings include emotional stress, medical conditions, and learning disabilities among many others. Factors applying to students do not apply to adult populations. In adult populations main factors include mental disorders, emotional disorders, substance abuse, and physical disabilities. Knowledge of psychological issues and behavior problems is paramount to being in a position to help.

Behavioral intervention combines knowledge from multiple fields. Some of the fields from which knowledge is derived are counseling and education, psychology, community health, and social work. This allows practitioners to work in a wide range of occupational settings. They also work with different client populations. The success of this method of correcting behavior highly depends on support systems such as schools and families to help with the adjustment, implementation, and monitoring.

Specific steps are followed in offering help in this process. The first step involves assessing the client so that the specific problem and its cause can be understood. Knowledge is drawn from various fields. The assessment is done by first collecting firsthand information about the client using methods such as psychological tests, interviews, and observation. Once the problem has been understood well, a method in the form of a plan is formulated to handle it.

The intention of using the plan is to produce change in behaviors. Targets are usually set to monitor if there is any progress being made. The client is also placed under close monitoring in their normal daily lives. In case the plan proves to be ineffective, it can be modified or replaced with another. If help from other experts is necessary, the specialist refers the client accordingly.

To become a behaviorist, one needs to obtain a bachelor degree in applied behavior analysis. Alternatively, one may obtain a related degree in counseling, early childhood education, social work, or psychology. A bachelor degree is usually enough for one to obtain certification with the BACB, the certification body in the US.

To become a board-certified behavior analyst, one needs to obtain a master degree. One is usually needed to provide proof of education, experience, and coursework in order to receive certification. There is also a certification examination that must be taken and passed in addition to a certification fee that applicants need to pay.
