Small Business Security Strategies: Business Fire Alarms

By Mark Mahaffey

If you have recently purchased a business fire alarm, you may be wondering there you should put it. There are several places that are key areas for these alarms. If you have only purchased one, consider buying more as soon as you can.

Having several fire alarms will increase the odds that you will survive a fire if one breaks out while you are in the building. Putting it near the ceiling is smart, because heat and smoke tend to drift upwards near the ceiling. Having an alarm in this space will help to detect the smoke and heat quickly.

Put alarms outside of every office door, inside offices, in the kitchen, in your conference room and in your parking garage. Be sure to put fresh batteries in your alarm very six months. If you live in the part of the country which has a time change in the fall and spring, consider using those times as reminders to change your batteries.

Every few months, make sure you run a test on your alarms. There should be a test button on each component. Push the button and make sure that the alarm is in good working order. If it is not, contact your dealer to get it checked out.

Do you work in a school system? If so, then you should enhance your business fire alarm system by installing sprinklers in the building. The alarms will alert you that a fire has broken out, but a sprinkler system may decrease the intensity of the fire itself, which is crucial for keeping people as safe as possible when a fire emergency occurs.

If the fire is not very big when the sprinklers are tripped, then the water may be enough to stop the fire, or at least slow it down enough that the fire department has time to arrive and bring it under control. As you search for a fire system, try to find one that will actually trip the sprinklers at the same time that the alarm sounds.
