The Applications Of Fiberglass Insulation

By Barun Kumar

Fiberglass which is also known as glass wool is mainly a plastic that is enforced with glass referred to as glass-fiber reinforced plastic. Fiberglass insulation therefore involves sealing and insulating homes or industries using the glass-reinforced plastic. Fiberglass is normally a very versatile material and has excellent properties such as being weather resistant, light and strong. It also comes as varieties of surface textures.

There are two major categories of the fiberglass one being the continuous fiber that is basically used in textile and lawn industries. The other variety is mainly used in making products such as lamination materials and blankets. Before the modern application of fiberglass, it was majorly used in manufacture of aircraft radomes. These were strong structures that were doom shaped made to protect a microwave such as a radar.

A modern use of fiberglass is the manufacture of sports cars and boats bodies, where such models were developed in 1950s. This has made a big impact in the automotives industry. A variation of fiberglass referred to as carbon fiber is used in aviation industry. The material is strong and non-corrosive and possesses the required standards of weight and volume.

Fiberglass is also employed in shrouding the antennas in telecommunications industry. Shrouding is a coating process and fiberglass is a good choice as it is very permeable to radio frequency signals. The glass wool also has less signal attenuation or interruption meaning that signals are not lost during communication.

Fiberglass is also used to cover other equipment where signal reception is not a priority, especially in cabinets and steel support structures. The flexibility of the fiberglass where it can be molded or painted to blend with other surfaces makes it the best choice. It can also be included in making sheet-form electrical insulators normally found in power related products. The lightweight and durability factor makes it a good raw material in making protective gears such as helmets and masks.

In domestic usage, the fiberglass can be used in making storage tanks. These may come with different specifications based on the usage of the tank. Tanks with high volume capacities of even 300 tonnes can be derived for storing fluids such as commercial oil or chemicals. The tanks are however made from strong woven filament fiber to ensure durability.

Using plastics to make building materials can be a favorite alternative to bulky metallic and wooden construction materials. Plastics are very lightweight and easy to handle as well as install. There are different housing components, which are now replaced with plastics such as window canopies, door surrounds, sills and roofing laminate. Fiberglass is now being incorporated with other acoustics to ensure that building panels are heat and sound proof.

The piping industry largely depends on the fiberglass to ensure new pipes that are durable and weatherproof are made. Pipes can be either above surface or underground based on the usage or topography of the area they are used. Textile industries also enjoy different options of fiberglass by making fabrics, yawn or in making molded and laminated plastic. The fiberglass variety of wool is used as an insulator for sound and heat at different settings.
