Simple Tips For Coaching A Basketball Team

By Jashua Moses

As you know, if you are a youth basketball coach, it is one of the most rewarding and exciting jobs that you can take part in. There are many aspects of the game that you can teach to young players, as well as the life skills that will stay with the team for many years to come. However, besides the character building skills that they will learn, you also need to teach them the basketball plays that will turn them into a winning team. Here are some of the things to consider:

First and foremost the coach needs to have a good understanding of each position on the floor and specifically the capabilities of their players within those positions. Take for example the center. Two of the main jobs of a center is to defend the rim and to grab rebounds, but if the center is below average at rebounding then the coach will need to make adjustments to compensate for this.

Your players do have to be able to think for themselves. The game is fast-paced, and as a result, the players have to adjust to situations as they occur on the court. You are not doing them any favors if you micromanage them during practice. It may be hard to step back every now and then, but it is important for your team's ultimate success.

History - think about how the team has done over the last few games, and focus on how the team played when they won the game. Also think about the areas of the game that they were outplayed by the opposition team. Knowing these things will help you to develop plays and drills that will improve the weaknesses of the team, while also solidifying the strengths.

Cutting is also a drill that deserves some attention. All players should know how to cut to the basket effectively. It is also something fun to do with your team. You have a big job as a youth basketball coach. However, focus on the drills above, and you will be sure to give your young players what they need to advance in the sport of basketball.

Triple threat - this can be done with a number of players during a training session. It will show players how to get into triple threat positions whenever one players catches the ball. Use the plays and drill listed above as a basketball coach, and you will find the team improving and having fun.
